Doreen has been interested in art for some time, and her involvement includes, drawing, sculpture, painting, photography and even art restoration. Recently, she has really taken a liking to digital photography, and as always, her favorites are in black and white.
Doreen lives in Germany and spent 13 years of her life behind the Wall - giving her an interesting perspective in her photography and a deep appreciation of things others may take for granted. She’s an occupational therapist working primarily with children and post-stroke patients. Doreen recently got a new Nikon D40 and she loves it! Hopefully that will generate more great pictures. Thank you for the great pictures Doreen.

Berlin Airlift
D. Pade, 2005, Digital PhotographBerlin, Germany
This is one of Doreen's favorite pictures - she's been waiting to catch these jets on camera for quite awhile. They are on final approach right by her place of work. This picture also comes with a very interesting story. The plane is landing at the airport which hosted the Berlin Airlift - Tempelhof. For almost half her life, Doreen lived behind the wall that created the need for the airlift. Now she has a great job and stands anywhere in Berlin, able to take pictures of whatever she wants. Surreal Reading

Here’s another great black and white shot of a statue and it's perfect with the blossom-less trees in the background. Statues like this always get my attention because of the mystery. Is this a ghost, an angel or just a person? Does that book bring with it safety and salvation or death and evil? My favorite part is her hidden face. Does she pause to cast us an icy gaze?
Dad's Protection

Whether human, wildlife or both, fierce struggles - especially the struggle for survival - are a great subject for art. The detail in this struggle is most impressive and the dominance of the lion really stands out.
Maybe the artist carved this during a time when Berlin was overcoming a specific obstacle. Or possibly, the snake represents Communism and the statue reminds us of its defeat.

Doreen found an interesting angle to place the Angel of Berlin over this lamp - they almost look like one piece.
She couldn't ask for a better sky for the background. It really makes the details of the lamp stand out.

Doreen loves statues of heroes and with this one, she captures a good angle on his face. Although it's heavy and he struggles a little, we are comforted that he will indeed be able to support the weight. I think the black and white makes an awesome contrast of the marbling.

Some things just strike you the first time you see them - this Bauta (or Cassanova) mask does that to me. I think it is the perfect mask and it has such a strong, imposing look while being so simple. Doreen took this great black and white picture with a nice Saint Marco's Square background. You can read more about the history of the mask here.
