Musée d'Orsay : 2013-12

I took my parents to the musée d'Orsay and it was a great visit - even the lines weren't very long. I've been there before, but here are some highlights of this round...

I really like Manet's Berthe Morisot (below, left). I like the bold colors and her eyes. More so, just a few paintings away, there is a painting from Morisot herself. Another Manet of interest was of Émile Zola. I don't particularly like the painting, but a street near my apartment is named after Zola so I was most interested in the connection / history.

In one of the art nouveau rooms is a Franz von Stuck. It is the Expulsion from Paradise (below, left). I couldn't believe it was there - almost hidden from a majority of the visitors. I was an instant fan of Stuck when I saw his Lucifer (below, right) in Germany seven years earlier.

And not more than a few meters away was a Gustav Klimt - Rosebushes under the Trees. It's not personal favorite, but it's still a Klimta and, in my opinion, not in a very flattering spot.

In the same area, there were some panels with artwork from Odilon Redon. I was unfamiliar with him or his work, but he has some great pieces. You can see a lot of his work at odilon-redon.org. These simple flowers were on display in d'Orsay.

In the Masculine / Masculine exhibition, there were a couple of works that really caught my eye. First, was Satan and Beelzebub by Sir Thomas Lawrence (below, left). I thought the lighting was impeccable. Second, was a painting I had seen before but couldn't remember if I took note. It is Égalité avant la mort by William-Adolphe Bouguereau. I think it's the motion and peacefulness that most caught my attention (below, right).

We had been walking around for quite awhile so we had a nice lunch at Café Campana on the 5th floor. I had the Italian salad which was pretty good. Above are the coasters on the tables which were also a promotion for the Masculine / Masculine exhibition.

As always, d'Orsay is a great place to visit and I always feel very comfortable there.

On the walk home, we were waiting for the Tour Eiffel to sparkle - my parents hadn't seen it - and this was a shot I took just before.
