Belleau Wood Ceremony : 2013-05

We attended at memorial ceremony in Belleau Wood (Bois de Belleau), more specifically, in the Cimetière Américain du bois de Belleau. It wasn't the warmest day, but it was actually great weather for such a somber event - and it was a great event. I didn't even know the AISNE-MARNE American Cemetery and Memorial was there. It's amazing how many cemeteries there are overseas. The ceremony itself has a website and you can read about the Battle of Belleau Wood here.
I had to take this picture of our two flags (ours and France's) at half mast with the gray sky.

On the left is the Memorial Chapel and on the right is a shot of the ceremony. It was cool because after I told my parents about the ceremony, they said they saw me there. That was weird, but lo and behold, the pic on the right was already on the web. And, yes, I'm in it. the flag is the same in the picture of both flags.

After the ceremony, we visited the Devil Dog fountain which is on a farm and a huge attraction for US Marines. In fact, the ceremony is largely attended by our Marines.
These pics are the farm buildings just across from the fountain. I thought the buildings and the mossy roofs were incredible. Below is a shot of the fountain (I thought I'd taken one, but didn't) and on the right a shot to show the landscape in the area. It was a good trip and experience. I'm glad I represented our military.
It was a good trip and experience. I'm glad I represented our military - and I was with a bona fide Marine! Hoorah!
