"Give them something higher". A couple friends and I would say that when speaking of dragonflies. If it's in season (when they're in large numbers) you can often raise your finger higher than wherever they're perched and they'll re-position on your finger. It's pretty awesome.
DFs amaze me and a couple of my favorite things are how they ratchet their wings down after they land somewhere. It doesn't matter if it's on a perch or a flat surface. Another thing I like to watch is when they look at something of interest (likely you if you get too close). They move their head like a robot and immediately return it to the 'home' position. Humans have tri-chromatic vision (combos of red, green and blue)...DFs have 11 to 30-chromatic vision. They're ultimate killers.
This Halloween Pennant is on my auto antenna - which happens almost every
time I park at the airfield. Great reminder that Flying IS Great.

This Red Eyed Dragonfly is in my yard. You can see him in the full wings-down position (after the robot ratchet). This DF is awesome, but these two pics are more to see what I could get with an iPhone camera.
