Whiffle : 2026-11

Whiffle
06 November 2026
Acrylic on canvas
18 x 24 inches (45.7 x 61 cm)

This was painted for a call-for-art, "Art the Matters to the Planet: Dark Skies" at the Roger Troy Peterson Institute. He was known as the father of field guides so I thought birds were appropriate. This year's exhibit This exhibition "will explore the night skies and what they mean to us. Artists are invited to turn their attention upwards, and explore who uses the night skies—birds that navigate in the darkness, animals that awaken when dusk settles, the effects of space pollution (orbital debris or “space junk”)—and what lies beyond the Earth’s atmosphere." I could have made a space image, too, but I did submit Growler since it shows a reducing iceberg - ant it's at night. I also added Burtowl to the mix. Crows are really nocturnal, but they also don't seem to care about the 'norms'. They love to play and fly and watching them is always fun. Here, I placed a crow whiffling at night. Pretty straight forward and I like it. The title is from the flight maneuver itself - Whiffle.

A gif showing the changes. I painted it in one afternoon/evening so there's not much to see.

This is a frame currently holding Whiffle. I made it with pressure-treated redwood-tone southern yellow pine. This board turned out much differently than others.  I may not use it again because it took a lot of prep and wasn't like other batches. Consistency is nice.
